HOW TO QUANTITATIVE FIT TESTING WORKS

A Simple 4-Step Process

Quantitative fit testing measures how well a respirator seals to an individual’s face and produces an objective fit factors measurement. We use a TSI PortaCount® instrument to perform quantitative testing with the respirator.

Fit-Test Screening

Receives instruction and completes the required screen process.

Respirator Selection

Respirator is checked for appropriate fit and configuration.

Fit-Test Exercises

Individual performs prescribed exercises while wearing respirator.

Fit-Factor Measurement

PortaCount® calculates the overall fit factor for the crewmember.

TSI PortaCount® Quantitative Fit Testing

Trusted Technology. Acurate Results.

Magnum EHS uses TSI PortaCount® to perform quantitative respirator fit testing. The instrument uses ambient aerosol condensation nuclei counter (CNC) protocol and a respirator-specific fit-test adapter to sample air from inside the face-piece.

Half-Mask Respirator

Minimum fit factor of 100.

Full-facepiece negative-pressure respirator

Minimum fit factor of 500.

Before Your Fit Test

Facial hair that interferes with sealing of the respirator must be removed before testing.

Frequently Asked Questions

Find answers to common questions about respirator training and quantitataive fit testing.

Quantitative respirator fit testing measures how well a tight-fitting respirator seals to the wearer’s face. Specialized equipment, including the TSI PortaCount®, measures the fit and provides an objective fit factor based on the respirator’s performance during testing.

Employees who are required to wear tight-fitting respirators as part of their workplace respiratory-protection program must receive appropriate respirator fit testing. Magnum provides on-site quantitative fit testing for medically cleared personnel in healthcare and maritime workplaces.
Respirator training covers proper respirator selection, donning and positioning, use, inspection, care, and maintenance. Training for healthcare personnel also addresses N95 respirator capabilities and limitations, while maritime training includes benzene hazards and other airborne contaminants.
During a quantitative fit test, the employee wears the assigned respirator while completing a series of prescribed exercises, which may include bending forward, moving the head, and jogging in place. A TSI PortaCount® measures the air inside the respirator and calculates the overall fit factor.
Under OSHA 29 CFR 1910.134, the minimum fit factor for a half-mask respirator is 100, while a full-facepiece negative-pressure respirator requires a minimum fit factor of 500. Proper respirator fit testing helps verify that the assigned respirator provides an appropriate face seal.
